Velella Velella, Sailing On The Ocean Breeze (#685)

Walking the beach at ebb tide, I saw something gelatinous and dark blue washed up by the latest wave.

It is a colony of organisms known as “by the wind sailor”, usually floating on open waters out at sea until strong winds and currents wash it ashore.

This one is nearly 3 inches long.  What a marvel of creation.

I appreciate the joy of a simple beach walk and the daily wonders it brings to me.
