Thousands of tiny hydrozoans were swept ashore by heavy winds and high tides.
A passing glance as I walked by caused me to imagine little clear plastic discs littering the sand.
Curiosity made me pick some up to discover they were actually little sea creatures with sails. (I found the old worn quarter on the beach too; it came in handy for showing the size of the hydrozoans)
Hydrozoans or “by the wind sailors” are related to jellyfish but do not sting. They float on top of the ocean directed by the whim of the wind. Hence the name “by the wind sailors.”
The blue and purple colors are pretty but they signify that the creatures are no longer living.
Every day’s wandering by the sea is a new adventure.
