Having lived the greater part of my life as a landlocked landlubber I am constantly in awe of the array of wildlife living out their lives at the edge of the sea.
My most perplexing find is the squirrel. Whenever I see one scampering along the water’s edge or over a boulder with the ocean thundering in the background, I think it must be on a vacation from its inland forest home.
The California ground squirrel burrows into seaside cliffs and lives its whole life along the water’s edge. This one was found at Asilomar Marine Reserve on a drive along the coast near Pacific Grove.

I wonder does this creature know the Paradise it’s found

I didn’t realise squirrels lived by the sea either – sensible squirrels. Nothing beats the beach. 🙂
You are quite right, Maggs! Sensible.
I too love the beach – any beach so I can understand why they would’t also. I only wonder what they eat? Beautiful pictures.
Thank you, Sher! They like to eat the sweet succulent plants that grow on the cliffs. Also small bird eggs, berries and nuts.
Fabulous photos Annie. He looks like a fat and sassy little guy.
Thank you, Teresa! He posed quite admirably for me that day while others scampered away.
I didn’t know this about squirrels! So grateful that I always learn something new! Great shot of it too!
Yes, seaside squirrel! Thank you, Ann Christine!
those are pretty smart squirrels…living it up on their beach front property. they must be the celebrities in the animal world. ha-ha. 🙂 you got a great collection here. nice!
Thank you! The only time in my life I have felt envious of a squirrel.
Well you sure made me smile…a squirrel at sea…what a great title this would be!!
So surprising to see!
Awwwww, it’s sooo cute!!! I wouldn’t expect a squirrel by the sea though. I really enjoy these photos!
Thank you, Meredith. Glad you enjoyed them.
Wow, that is one big squirrel! He looks like he’s having a good time sunbathing.
Great to hear from you, Arianna! Enjoy your day!
Our squirrels at the beaches here live there only because the people bring food to the beaches, set the food down on their beach towels, and head for the water. While they are gone, the squirrels raid the food. They aren’t dumb!……….lol
Great to hear from you! They must live well…your squirrels!
Oh, they definitely do. I admit that I’m one who enjoys feeding them. See here: http://russelrayphotos2.com/2013/12/15/planning-on-triplets/
The first picture is a result of my handiwork in feeding the squirrels.
Love your photos. Great close-ups and I can tell that they are used to people.
Gosh, they have come a long way haven’t they!
Just one of those rare animals that is omnipresent!
Your landscapes have left me breathless Annie. WOW! Finding a squirrel there must have made your day 😀 🙂 GREAT PHOTOS!!!
The West Coast has so many jewels I look forward to discovering. Thank you, Paula, for such a heart-warming compliment!
