Pi Bridge in Toad Suck, Arkansas (#177)

Camping on lakes and rivers operated by the Corps of Engineers can take you to unheard of and unforgettable places.

Traveling through Arkansas yesterday I stopped for the night at Toad Suck Park.  (Yes, there’s an unusual story for that name).

This photo shows the underbelly of the bridge over the Arkansas River at the park.

To me it looks like the symbol “Pi”.  Actually, many pi.  The many pi bridge.   Oooh, now I’m hungry for pie.

Great photos! Looks very peaceful, or is there a lot of noise from people crossing the bridge?

I would like to hear the story behind the name! : )

    • Well then….here you are, Alice:
Way back in the mid 1800s, a tavern sat along the river bank at the old ferry crossing where the park is today. The patrons at the tavern loved to drink. A traveler noted that when they sucked on their drinks they swelled up like toads. So people started calling the place Toad Suck. (I didn’t make this up) Enjoy!

That’s a hoot! If Alice hadn’t asked, I was gonna! Enjoy your stay and have a drink on me. :)

You got a beautiful camping spot! Nice views. I love the structure of the bridge.

You have picked a great spot there Annie, under those trees and by the river. Love the name!

  6. Your “tin can” looks marvelous, and so does all of the scenery. Thank you for taking us all along for the ride! What a pleasure!

That is pretty funny. I was looking for a place to camp when taking my daughter on a college visit to UCA. From what I understand a lot of college activities take place in the park (official events not the “park” kind, although I’m sure that happens too.

We probably will swing by to get a picture by the sign, they should have T-shirts if they don’t. Most likely will stay at Lake Conway.
